In the age of fourteen, Brink became pregnant and was forced to quit high school. When she had the birth of her child Davion she was able to move into an apartment and began working in a local laundry shop to make both ends meet. Her first band, Pulse from Albany New York was founded in the year 1995. The band mainly opened local bands such as Coal Chamber or Sevendust. The band's members eventually separated. The singer made the move from Los Angeles in 2002, in her late 20s and was looking for a huge break. Brink started working in store as well as sing in pubs. Brink was looking for bands. At an audition, she was reunited with Chris Howorth two years after having met Howorth two years prior. Howorth was hesitant to let her audition since she was a female. He changed his mind after hearing her singing. Together with drummer Jeff Fabb they formed the group that they named Dying Stars. Blake Bunzel on guitar and Josh Newell on bass joined the group later. In This Moment became the new name for the band following two live performances.
